India’s Supreme Court says that economic status of a murder convict needs to be taken into account to determine whether he should be awarded death penalty or life sentence even in respect of offences falling in the “rarest of rare” category. How will this play  out? A  rush to be categorised as “poor” ?( think of the possibilities given what happens with Below the Poverty Line (BPL) cards). And will  crime be  outsourced to the poor to leverage the law?
